Bad Robot and It's Time for Color

I’m not a painter, but I’ve decided to play around with more color. I’m trying remember old techniques as well as learn new ones—so please forgive the art until I can get to a better place.

My first experiment this year is some fan art that you might recognize. If you’ve ever watched a movie (like some of the new Star Wars or Star Trek films) or TV show made by J. J. Abrams, @jjabramsofficial you’ve probably seen the red robot character that introduces his production company Bad Robot @bad_robot (also led by Katie McGrath), at the beginning of each.

The Bad Robot icon was bold enough to start playing around in color. Since I don’t have any color art supplies, I borrowed some acrylic paint from my son. Not ready to go full on paint, I watered it down and make a watercolor-like wash.

Welcome 2022

Well, it's 2022. Let's see if we can do better and make more art this year. It is starting off a bit slow, but I have managed to make a few things, including a couple of commissions.

Let's start with earlier this month, with my wife's birthday. I couldn't find a greeting card that really matched her personality or interests, so I made one. She loved it so much that she ended up framing it.

I also did a commission. Sort of.

The folks at my office Launch Agency did a raffle for our food drive last month. Various folks donated prizes, and I was asked to give away a commission as one of them.

This piece is the first of two options that I made for my coworker, Isaac , who was the winner of my raffle prize, and was gracious enough to choose a topic that was actually fun to draw.

Here I’ve made some fan art of the amazing Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. Isaac wanted something with one if his favorite characters, BMO and left the rest up to me. I ended up making 2 pieces from this and gave them both to Isaac.

"BMO, sometimes written phonetically as "Beemo" is a MO-series robotic video game console system/computer/VCR combo unit who lives with Finn and Jake...Despite being an object used for recreation by Finn and Jake, BMO is still considered a close friend and treated as an equal by the two.” - Wikipedia

Here, I drew BMO hanging out with a stylized Finn (sorry I left out Jake), playing games together.

Here, I drew BMO hanging out in the Boat Treehouse that is seen on the show.

Finally, I was able to connect with friend Stan Hart, the other day, who passed off the cool t-shirt from Zumografx with my Inktober art that they repurposed for an event graphic (with permission). My only regret is missing the event.
